| Station 33, Station 32, Squad 79 (covering township squad 34 for the evening) and Life Support Seven dispatched to 1 Landis Ave, at the New Jersey State Police - Bridgeton Barracks for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident/Rescue Assignment. First arriving units confirmed entrapment and a vehicle on its roof. As 33's units arrived, we were confronted with one of the wildest scenes any of us can remember. Apparently, a 29 year old man was driving West-bound on Landis Ave approaching State Highway 77 at an estimated 100+ MPH when he lost control. His vehicle, a mid-nineties Toyota Camry crossed the on-coming lane, tore right through a utility pole into the parking lot of Walgreens drug store. It then obliterated the front end of a Volkswagen New Beetle, then the rear end of a Honda before striking a curb and going airborne. While flipping through the air toward the Barracks, the Camry struck another utility pole approx 21/2 feet off the ground, bringing it and wires down. The car then plowed into the rear of a State Police Ford Crown Victoria, throwing it into the front of the building, totalling it and exacting substantial damage to the building. The impact with the patrol car, sent the Camry upwards, where it collided violently with the roof (!) of the barracks before crashing back down to the asphalt, landing on its roof, which was crushed down to dashboard level. Debris from the vehicles shattered most of the windows on the front side of the Barracks, and must have provided for a very frightening moment for the Troopers inside. The Camry was reduced to a heap of scrap metal, and Seabrook Fire and Rescue (Sta 32 ) had to extricate the Patient with hydraulic rescue tools while other personnel tended to the fluid and debris hazards spread over almost 400 square feet. Miraculously, the Pt sustained only minor obvious injuries but was flown to Cooper Trauma Center in Camden as a precaution due to the unbelievable circumstances of the wreck. Station 33 units remained on scene until 4am assisting the State Police with the clean up and investigation. This was not a call that will be soon forgotten by anyone who was there. |
